Transitional changes to penalty rates

Sunday and public holiday penalty rates will be reduced by 25 percentage points under a decision from the Fair Work Commission. This reduction will be phased in over a three or four year period, depending on the award.

The awards that are affect are:

• General Retail Industry Award 2010 (phased in over 3 or 4 years)

• Fast food Industry Award 2010 (3 years)

• Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010 (3 years)

• Pharmacy Industry Award 2010 (4 years)

Reductions in the penalty rates will commence from 1 July 2017 but will be phased in with reductions of 5% or 10% per year.

On current rates, the proposal would change a full-time level 1 food and beverage attendant on the Hospitality Award from $31.87 in June 2017 to $30.96 per hour on Sundays in July 2017.
